Which Dining Chair?

With the wealth of dining chair styles available, it can be hard to know which style to choose. Which design reflects your style and looks good, but is also practical and functional for the way you live?

In recent years, the Eames chair and other midcentury modern styles have dominated in apartments and informal dining areas, most likely due to their durability and functionalism. Upholstered dining chairs disappeared for a while - in tandem with the disappearance of the formal dining room - but recently I've noticed a comeback as more colour is reintroduced in interior schemes.

My favourite chairs remain the classic styles such as the Wishbone, Bentwood and Cross-Back chairs. Any of these look great around a modern glass table for the purposes of styling to sell, and you can buy reasonably-priced replicas from Matt Blatt (now in Balgowlah!)

We are now seeing a return to the step-up in luxury of the formal Hamptons dining room in other interior styles as well, as upholstered dining chairs make a comeback. Albeit not as practical as the plastic and timber seat of some Scandinavian chairs, the upholstered dining chair does add another layer of warmth and texture to the modern, open-plan living area. And in a darker, stain-resistant fabric or leather, they can be just as practical.

In terms of suppliers here in the Northern Beaches, we are spoilt by the fabulous Wood Room with its range of beautifully crafted chairs - where you can even design your own! I love the curves of their Le Corbusier in black and their Joe Oak chair with its white Lloyd Loom weave.

Provincial Living offers a range of beautiful upholstered chairs for French or Hamptons schemes. I love their French Dining chair in black velvet for a sophisticated, elegant (and not impractical) look.

Then there's Freedom, which you can't beat for price and quality. Their Daintree chair, for tropical or coastal schemes, and their Franco chair for more modern living stand out for me.

For classic sophistication, look no further than the button-back Espen Scoop-Back dining chair from Brosa, available in a wide range of colours, or the Oak and Pu Leather Tan Darcy Carver chair from Temple and Webster. And if you've got the budget, or are lucky enough to own a sleek apartment in the city, you won't go far wrong with BoConcept's Aarhus.

Your dining area is one of the high traffic areas of your home. It's where you serve food, eat and entertain, it's where the kids do their homework, and sometimes you might work there as well. So you need to get the chairs right. You do need to think about comfort as well as style, but we're fortunate to have many comfortable and stylish options available. And with the current winter sales, there's really no better time to invest in one.
