Decluttering To Sell

The most important thing you can do when you put your property on the market if you are still living in it, is to declutter.

I know, I know... it hurts to put away all those personal effects and treasures that you've collected over the years, that make your house a home. But it's super-important if you want to sell for the best price.

You don't want to distract your potential buyers with cute photos of your children, or that collection of didgeridoos you found in Darwin. You want them to see the magnificent natural beauty of your home, its natural light and abundant space. You want your buyers to imagine themselves living in your home, which they won't if they're staring at the style of your wedding dress.

YOU NEED TO DE-PERSONALISE.

Too much clutter goes against everything you are trying to achieve when you market your property. It makes rooms feel smaller, it makes it difficult for buyers to visualise the size of the space and how their own furniture will fit into it, and it can prevent the natural flow of light into a room.

And that goes for surplus furniture as well. I've seen small units with two or three sofas crammed into them! And trust me, you probably don't need that huge dresser you inherited from your grandma.

But don't worry, I'm not recommending you get rid of your prized possessions. Store them, either at a professional storage centre, (particularly the larger furniture pieces), or pack smaller items neatly into boxes in the garage, ready for your impending move.

REMEMBER, LESS IS USUALLY MORE WHEN YOU ARE STYLING TO SELL!
